Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A Silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned:  Sable a griffin segreant Argent collared Azure (Oriental Blue) the collar charged with three plates all within a bordure compony of the second and third.  Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Silver scroll inscribed "INTELLIGENCE FOR VICTORY" in Blue letters.

Symbolism
Oriental blue and silver gray are the colors associated with the Military Intelligence Branch.  The checky background alludes to a chess board and symbolizes the use of intelligence information in formulating military strategy and countermeasure.  The griffin, noted for keen eyesight, symbolizes vigilance and penetration of the unknown as suggested by the black area.  The three discs on the griffin's collar allude to the three battle engagements in which contingents of the unit have participated.

The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 27 May 1981.
